The Sweet Story Behind the Doughnut Dollies

Join Us in Making a Difference with Every Doughnut!

In honour of the Salvation Army Doughnut Dollies and Remembrance Sunday, we’re thrilled to support The Adolescent and Children’s Trust (TACT), a dedicated fostering charity.

As a family-owned artisan bakery, we cherish kindness, community, and support, and we consider our staff and customers as part of our extended family.

Picture this: it’s 1917, a homesick soldier in France received a freshly fried doughnut from a cheerful Salvation Army lassie. This small gesture became a lasting symbol of love and comfort for the armed forces.

The Sweet Story Behind the Doughnut Dollies

Ensign Helen Purviance and Ensign Margaret Sheldon, equipped with ingenuity and a desire to bring a taste of home to soldiers, used a wine bottle as a rolling pin and a knife to create doughnuts in a makeshift kitchen. The irresistible aroma soon drew long lines of soldiers, waiting patiently in mud and rain.

With creativity and resourcefulness, Helen crafted a doughnut cutter from a condensed milk can and a camphor-ice tube. More soldiers lined up for a little taste of home and a special treat that lifted their spirits. Additional Salvation Army lassies joined in to help make the beloved doughnuts. Word spread, and the doughnuts became a hit, earning the Salvation Army lassies the affectionate nickname “doughnut dollies.” Their efforts went beyond serving doughnuts, providing comfort and support through canteens, religious services, and more.

Continuing the Legacy

Today, the tradition of the doughnut dollies lives on through Salvation Army services and in times of peacetime emergencies. These beloved doughnuts symbolise the organisation’s readiness to help in times of need.
